about

The following is inspired by a true story. It was 1967...The Night The Hobbits Played The Rolling Stones At The Seminary Talent Show.

In 1964 my father left his family and the farm in St. Johns, Michigan to a seminary in Indiana. Here he met some life-long friends and helped to form a band named The Hobbits. After a couple years of persistence with the priests, The Hobbits convinced them to hold the one and only talent show at the seminary. Following poetry, folk music and readings, The Hobbits took the stage that fateful night in 1967. For an audience of only their fellow students and the priests, The Hobbits unleashed an epic cover of The Rolling Stones "Let's Spend the Night Together:" Soon after the events of this show, The Hobbits had all their instruments taken away from them. For those in attendance, it is said that it was the day Rock and Roll was both born and then died.

lyrics

The Hobbits

Nineteen sixty-seven
Breaking into heaven
All the wildflowers in the rectory garden
Bloomed beneath the moon

Fourteen we left our mothers
Strangers became our brothers
Smoking cigarettes behind the rectory garden
Bloomed beneath the moon

The night The Hobbits played the Rolling Stones
Amen for rock and roll
Forgive them father and the devil’s tone
They’re only trying to save our souls
At the seminary talent show

I should have just held your hand
Instead of dreaming of the holy land
To spend the night together in the rectory garden
Bloomed and doomed

(Chorus)

Every father signed the cross and prayed
And the sound of silence ruled the day
They locked away every last guitar
But the feedback…the feedback still echoes near and far

(Chorus)

Bah! Bah! Bah! Bah! Bah! Bah! Bah! Bah!….
