The Clouds are above us now When gravity brought down heaven We were love birds So caught up in our tailwind Landing in love is so hard when we're falling Landing in love is hard When we're falling back to Earth in a grand tailspin Are we expecting to fly Over mountains and great divides While we're bound to vows not ours Or are we only human Born to work this land with our hands Through the hardest of times In the fields of our hearts When love becomes a whole lot easier When love becomes a whole lot easier Said than done We're stumbling through the dark Hallways and clinging to Better times framed Whenever skies were blue Learning to love is so hard when we're falling Learning to love is hard When we're falling back on A memory that's fading too When we say love we need to get it done

There are beautiful distractions Moments short and sweet There are beautiful distractions Moments short but sweet Chances are the roads I choose to take And with everyone along the way I greet All these beautiful distractions Moments short but sweet There are beautiful distractions That come as some surprise There are beautiful distractions That come as some complete surprise I've composed my life with re-arrangements But find it so much sweeter when I improvise All these beautiful distractions Come as some surprise There are beautiful distractions That remind me I'm alive There are beautiful distractions That remind me I'm still alive Even the busy bees working overtime Forget to stop and taste the honey from the hive All these beautiful distractions Remind me I'm alive There are beautiful distractions That bring out my happy dance There are beautiful distractions That bring out our happy dance Our rhythm is not written in the stars But in following the beating of our hearts All these beautiful distractions Bring out our happy dance So let us dance

I've got love But there's something wrong with me I've got love But there's something wrong with me Why? You've got time But it's framed up on your wall You've got time But it's framed up on your wall Why? Why are we so hard to please? Is it so hard to believe? That we are alive and clinging All the same like winter leaves We've got one world But we dream up something more We've got one life And still we dream up something more Why? Why isn't our love, love enough? Why isn't our time, time enough? Why isn't the world, the world enough? Why isn't our life, life enough? Why?

Cold Coffee 04:58
On a dark night Making for your harbor in the storm In in a turnabout With bitter winds that bide Our motions come and go Meaninglessly drifting into rocks on the shore Where we come to On our separate sides Cold coffee The sugar's in the bottom of our cup We're not empty Maybe we just need to stir it up While these spells run dry Let's savor every drop of sun & rain Cold coffee Is better than no coffee any day In the wee hours Of a morning in our corner of the woods We're going round for round Throwing wrongs and rights We're not out until We're coming out together as a new day breaks But we're still out cold And yet to see the light Through a silent night I cross a broken dessert for your shore I miss you more Than words or pride it seems Oh my lips are dry I'm just about to speak, then I feel your breath We are wide awake Now from the same sweet dream I would take you over anything and anyway Cold coffee is better than no coffee any day

I want to run with you And Moon River I want to see the world Like those two drifters When the night is a lullaby When the day is an ode too What a beautiful life this is I'd like to sing them with you I'd like to sing them with you Without the radio Without the radio You already know by heart How my vow to you goes Without the radio You know all the words to every Josh Ritter record So if you'll be my Northern Lights I'll be your Good Man forever When the harmony's hard to find When the life's a short but sweet tune Before the world plays it's final note I will sing them with you I will sing them with you On and on and on... Forever is how my vow to you goes Even without the radio

Once upon a time I tended A rose garden with my bare hands And left it on the vine, till I made her mine Then with a hand full of thorns The rose began to to wilt and rot And the pedals that fell Said she loved me not Said she loved me not So it is with pretty flowers While impossible to hold They always have endured in odes...so I taught the birds to serenade I taught the birds to serenade I taught the birds to serenade her name For she was easier sung than loved any day Once upon a time we lived In the Periwinkle Glen, we were wed In the sunshine where I made her mine Bun Sonny cursed the rain The earth died of thirst as she drank the last drop And the pedals that fell Said she loved me not Said she loved me not So it is with rain and flowers While impossible to hold They always will endure in odes...so Now all that's left to hold on to Are the silent nights and rests between the notes Since every morning breaks the same With Sonny's ode...so

Istanbul Sky 06:24
We've been told our days are numbered Suddenly you're no longer asleep in my arms So each day you were born I swore I'd realign the oracle's starts I built a tower on an island In the middle of my harbor, a strait To keep you far away From the poison of this cruel world and hate But there is no place on earth I know of that far away If I cannot be With you for all of your days Or raise you up In the Istanbul sky Then I will be Here for you all of my days When the world let's you down Beneath the Istanbul sky I will kiss away the tears Of your rivers and seas Till the tide lifts your ships When it's time to let go The sand knows Just when beneath us to slip So I will hold you till that moment And rock you in my arms Through long nights and rough waters There's no higher love Than the love for a daughter There is no higher love I know Than my love for you daughters

Spark Away 05:31
Could we agree We've never seen the earth this black and blue That these days we stray From even being human too While some have learned That we must keep this turning rock Our children's home Others yearn to see it burn And as a stepping stone There's no sure fire But man we're just a spark away There's no sure fire But man we're just a spark away...either way When the earth shakes or a levee breaks The stars appear with interest There's a stage lit bright for the satellites Captivating all of us So we sail on in and save the day Then aweigh our anchored hope And sail away in yesterday's Newspaper boat There's no sure fire When the world just turns away There's no sure fire When everybody talks of change There's no sure fire When we weren't born just yesterday There's no sure fire When we're just a spark away Just a shot away, just a vote away Just a turn away, just a peace away Either way

about

With the birth of his youngest daughter, Brian took a year off of work to provide child care as a stay home dad. During this special time with Layla and self-reflection, Brian began writing the songs for Beautiful Distractions. With a restricted budget and the desire to release this material, he recorded and produced all the songs on a mini iPad in his home in Kalamazoo. Brian composes a heart-felt album with it's running theme of how our own actions of love and compassion without conditions, can make for a better life and world.
